THE MONOPOLY GAMESHOW

The world’s most famous board game is now Monopoly the Gameshow!

Three contestants try to become real estate tycoons by answering questions, collecting properties, and making the most money!

Contestants collect the colored properties (and subsequent monopolies) on the board by answering crossword puzzle-type questions.

The contestants will be given the first letter in the answer for each question, which will be the same for every question on each of the four sides (or blocks) of the board.  The first side contains five colored properties: (Mediterranean Avenue, Baltic Avenue, Oriental Avenue, Vermont Avenue, and Connecticut Avenue).

Let’s say the letter than beings each answer on this side of the board is “N”.

The first property that can be won is Mediterranean Avenue.  Here is an example crossword-type question:

QUESTION: Limerick Location

The first contestant that buzzes in can give an answer.  If they are correct, they receive the value that the property is worth, (In this case, Mediterranean Ave. is worth $60) and also initial control of that property. [CORRECT ANSWER: Nantucket]

If a contestant buzzes in and is incorrect, they are deducted the value of the property from their score.  If no contestant answers correctly, another question is asked to all contestants, but the value of the property is cut in half.

The next property available is Baltic Avenue.  Another question is asked:

QUESTION: Rae or Jean

If the contestant that answered correctly on Mediterranean Ave also answers correctly on Baltic Avenue, they earn the $60 for the value of Baltic, and have successfully earned the monopoly. [CORRECT ANSWER: Norma]

They are then awarded additional money, which is the sum of the values of the properties in the monopoly. (In this case, an additional $120 is awarded)

The monopoly is marked the color of the contestant that earned it (Red).

If either of the other two contestants buzzes in a gives a correct answer for Baltic Avenue, the two contestants with control over the properties will battle for control of the full monopoly.

Another question is asked for just those two contestants.  If a contestant answers it correctly, they win control of the monopoly.  If an answer is incorrect, they forfeit their property.

For monopolies with three properties, if one property is controlled by one contestant, and two by another, the contestant with only one property must answer two questions in a row to earn the monopoly, while the other contest just has to answer one.

If all three contestants control a property in a monopoly:

  1. If a contestant answers the first question correctly, they then choose which of the other two contestants they want to challenge for the monopoly.  Then rules apply the same for two-property monopolies.
  2. If a contestant answers the first question incorrectly, they forfeit control of their property and the other two contestants continue as with a two-property monopoly.

Gameplay continues around the board until all monopolies have been awarded.  Players will then use the money they have earned in the Property Round to purchase houses and hotels.

All houses cost $50, while hotels cost $250 each.  Like the board game, all houses/hotels must be bought evenly across a monopoly.  Buying houses/hotels for your properties will increase their rent, thus increasing the amount of money that can be won in the Second Round (Monopoly Round).

Contestants may buy as many or as few houses/hotels as they wish (as long as they can afford it).  The amount that was spent on houses/hotels will be deducted from their score.

At the end of the Monopoly Round, all houses/hotels are sold back at the same price to the contestants that own them (which can change in the Monopoly Round).

All contestants are controlled by the same token (Rich Uncle Pennybags, or “Mr. Monopoly”)

He will begin on “Go” and two dice are rolled, moving him to the corresponding space.  Below are the different scenarios depending on where he ends up.

If a property is landed on, the contestant who owns it is given a question (same crossword style clue).  If they answer it correctly, they earn the rent value of that property (Oriental Avenue with one house = $110; Tennessee Avenue with 3 houses = $570, etc.).

If they are incorrect, they are not deducted any money, however, the remaining two contestants can then buzz in.  If one of them answer correctly, they receive the rent, but if they are incorrectly, they are deducted the rent value.

No matter the result, the property will remain with the contestant who originally owns it.

Landing on one of the four railroads triggers a “Hostile Takeover”

This is where monopolies can change hands.  A toss-up question will be asked.  The contestant who answers correctly then chooses which monopoly they would like to take over.

Let’s say Will (Gold) wins the toss-up and chooses to take over the Blue monopoly (Park Place and Boardwalk), which is currently owned by Morgan (Green).

Since there are two properties in that monopoly, Will has to answer two questions in a row in order to take over that monopoly, starting on Park Place, and moving to the next property after each correct response.

If he is successful, the monopoly becomes his as well as any houses/hotels on it, and receives the value of the properties combined (in this case, $750) added to his score.

If a contestant chooses to take over a monopoly with three properties, they must answer three questions correctly to control that monopoly.

If at any point the challenging contestant answers a question incorrectly, the takeover ends and they will be penalized the full rent amount of the property they are currently on.  (This makes the Hostile Takeover a high-risk, high-reward play)

Gameplay then continues from the last property in the takeover.

All contestants are asked a toss-up question.  Whomever answers correctly earns $100 multiplied by the number on the dice when the space was landed on.

A card will be drawn for the corresponding pack and all contestants will follow its instructions. (i.e. move to particular space on the board, earn money, pay fines, etc.)

Landing on “Go To Jail” sends Mr. Monopoly to Jail and each contestant is fined $250.  Movement then continues clockwise as normal with no additional fine to get out of jail.

Landing on “Just Visiting” doesn’t affect players and the dice are rolled again.

Landing on “Income Tax” deducts $200 from each players’ score.

Landing on “Luxury Tax” deducts $75 from each players’ score.

All players collect $200 after passing.

Contestants can win the “Free Parking Jackpot” by answering another toss-up question.  The jackpot begins at $500.  Any fines or taxes that were paid before landing on Free Parking go into the jackpot.  The jackpot resets to $500 after the Free Parking question is answered.

This is an element that can be adjusted for any particular game (See SUGGESTIONS).  By default, we are setting the Monopoly Round to last for 10 minutes.  The final roll of the dice before the 10-minute mark is up will be the final roll of the round, and the resulting gameplay will be carried out on the final space.

After the Monopoly Round comes to an end, all houses and hotels are sold back to the bank and players are credited their amounts.  Whichever contestant has the most money in their bank after that wins the game and proceeds to the Bonus Round!

Starting from “Go”, the winning contestant must try to get all the way around the Monopoly board in five rolls or less of the dice.

Before the Bonus Round begins, the contestant must place extra “Go To Jail” spaces around the board (one on Block 2, one on Block 3, and two on Block 4).  Landing on a “Go To Jail” space automatically ends the Bonus Round.

For each space they cover, $50 dollars are added to the bank.  If at any time the player fears landing on a “Go To Jail,” or doesn’t think they can make it around the board in enough rolls, they may stop and bank whatever money they have accumulated.

As in the standard board game, rolling DOUBLES allows for a free roll.  In this case, rolling doubles prevents the ROLLS LEFT counter from going down.

If the contestant is able to go all the way around the board in five rolls or less, they win the Bonus Round and $25,000!

If they are able to land EXACTLY on “Go”, they win $50,000! (See SUGGESTIONS)

If they land on “Go To Jail” or fail to go around the board in five roll, they lose the Bonus Round and any money accumulated up to that point.

*FOR ALL SHOWS: The main purpose for these shows is entertainment and fun, first and foremost.  While many of these games display large amounts of money and/or lavish prizes, we do NOT provide any such prizes for the games.  All parties are welcome to provide their own prizes/gifts that may be implemented in gameplay.  Below are simply some suggestions we have come up with in order to make the gameplay more interesting and/or competitive.

*ADD A SWAG BAG!: Want to play for real prizes?  Add a swag bag of awesome Eek! products to any gameshow package and award gifts as individual prizes or play for an ultimate prize package!

For larger groups, contestants can play in teams rather than as individuals.

For the Monopoly Round, you may adjust the time or rules as you wish.  Instead of a timer, you could set a number of times around the board before the round is over.  NOTE:  There may be an extra charge for an extended Monopoly Round (30 min.+)

If you would like to provide your own prizes, you could provide them for winning the Main Game and/or Bonus Round.

Since “The Monopoly Gameshow” uses an accumulated cash system, you can use the “money” to keep score, or you could use the “money” won as a currency to buy prizes.  For example, if a contestant “wins” a total of $5,000, they could trade that money in for a prize (say a $5 Starbucks gift card is worth $2,000, a $10 Amazon card is worth $3,000, a paid day off work is worth $5,000, etc.).  Again, you would need to provide these prizes, but we are happy to keep score for you.
